What a Lair Is

Lairs are patch 12.1's replacement for open-world bosses, and the change is bigger than it sounds. Instead of a free-roaming monster that a passing zerg can tag out from under you, a Lair sits at a fixed location with a summoning stone outside it: you pick a difficulty on an interface, summon your group, and fight the boss in an instanced encounter that belongs to you. Blizzard describes them as instanced World Bosses, but mechanically they behave like one-boss mini-raids, which is why the Tidebound Grotto is already being counted as the patch's ninth raid boss. No tag race, no loot lost to a bigger raid that showed up first.

Nymrissa Wavecaller and the Tidebound Grotto

The Grotto is a submerged cave beneath the waves of Atal'Utek, off the Coiled Isle, the serpent-themed zone revealed when the fog east of Zul'Aman lifts. Its entrance is underwater and the cave is kept hidden behind shifting tides. Nymrissa Wavecaller is the naga sorceress who commands those tides and uses them to conceal her domain, and she does not fight alone: her murloc minions answer when she calls. She is the first Lair boss in the game and the only raid boss in patch 12.1 to offer Flexible Mythic, which scales the encounter for 15 to 25 players rather than locking it to a fixed roster.

Nymrissa Wavecaller on World, Normal, Heroic, and Mythic

The Grotto runs on four difficulties and you choose one at the summoning stone before the group goes in. World is the open tier, the closest thing left to the old world-boss experience. A Nymrissa Wavecaller Normal kill is the real entry point, the clean way to take the boss and the Great Vault credit without turning the evening into a progression fight. Nymrissa Wavecaller Heroic steps the encounter up for groups that want the fight to push back. Nymrissa Wavecaller Mythic runs on Flexible Mythic, scaling for 15 to 25 players instead of locking you to a fixed roster, and it is the only boss in patch 12.1 that offers it.

What actually separates the four is the upgrade track the loot lands on:

Every difficulty drops at 1/6 of its track, so the number above is a floor you upgrade from, not a ceiling. Mythic putting you straight onto the Myth track is the reason the top difficulty is worth the group.
