In Diablo 4 Season 14, weapon gems are multiplicative damage tied to your damage type, so the single most important gem choice is matching the gem in your weapon to your build. Armor gems give defensive or attribute bonuses, and jewelry gems patch resistances. This guide covers the best gem for every slot, the full tier ladder up to Flawless Horadric, how sockets work, and the fastest ways to farm gems.
How Gems Work in Season 14
A gem's effect depends entirely on the slot you put it in:
- Weapon - a multiplicative damage bonus tied to a specific damage type. This is the biggest single power source a gem offers.
- Armor - a defensive or attribute bonus (primary stats, barrier, and similar), which varies by gem.
- Jewelry - a large elemental resistance matching the gem, used to fill resistance gaps.
Sockets are added at the Jeweler with a Scattered Prism (from World Bosses, Treasure Goblins and Legion events) on Ancestral gear; two-handed weapons can hold two. One key rule: gems and runes share the same sockets. Socketing a rune into a gemmed item removes the gems, and vice versa, so plan around our runewords tier list when deciding what goes where. Gems can be un-socketed freely at the Jeweler, and salvaging an item returns its gem.
Best Gem for Each Weapon (Damage Type)
Match your weapon gem to your build's main damage type. At Grand quality a single-element gem gives roughly a 24% multiplicative bonus, while Diamond gives about 20% to all damage - the flexible pick when your build has no dominant element.
Damage type | Gem | Grand weapon bonus (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
Shadow | ~24% Shadow | |
Poison | ~24% Poison | |
Fire / Holy | ~24% Fire and Holy | |
Cold | ~24% Cold | |
Physical | ~24% Physical | |
Lightning | ~24% Lightning | |
All damage | ~20% All Damage |
Because the weapon bonus is multiplicative, it scales with the rest of your build, which is why upgrading your weapon gem to the highest tier you can is one of the biggest damage jumps available. On a two-socket weapon, run two of the same type.
Armor and Jewelry Gems
Outside the weapon, gem choice is about survivability rather than raw damage:
- Armor - pick the gem whose defensive or attribute bonus your build needs. These give things like primary stats, barrier generation or extra life, so the best armor gem is build-dependent rather than universal.
- Jewelry - each gem grants resistance to its element, and those values are large in Season 14. Slot the gem that covers your lowest resistance: Ruby for Fire, Sapphire for Cold, Emerald for Poison, Topaz for Lightning, Amethyst for Shadow.
Check your character sheet for the resistance you are lowest on and fill it first - one capped resistance is worth more than spreading gems thin. There is no excuse for an empty resistance socket this season, since gem sources were buffed.

Gem Tiers and Horadric Gems
Gems climb through tiers, and the top two are the real endgame chase. You craft up to Grand at the Jeweler from Gem Fragments (Grand also needs Forgotten Souls). The two highest tiers, Horadric and Flawless Horadric, are made only in the Horadric Cube with the Amalgamation recipe, not at the Jeweler.
Tier | How to get it | Weapon multiplier (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
Crude to Royal | Jeweler, from Gem Fragments | Scales up per tier |
Grand | Jeweler, Gem Fragments plus Forgotten Souls | ~24% (element) / ~20% (Diamond) |
Horadric | Cube: 5 Grand of the same type | ~28% |
Flawless Horadric | Cube: 5 Horadric (25 Grand total) | ~32% |
Because each step is a 5-to-1 Amalgamation, a single Flawless Horadric gem costs 25 Grand gems, so prioritise the one gem that matches your main damage type before touching secondary sockets. Higher Horadric tiers also pull in extra materials (War Plan and Undercity rewards), so treat a full Flawless Horadric weapon as a long-term goal, not a day-one one; a Horadric Diamond or Flawless Horadric Diamond is the top-tier example. Full conversion and cube recipes are in our crafting cheat sheet.
How to Farm Gems Fast
Everything above runs on Gem Fragments and Grand gems, so here is how to stockpile them:
- Gem Fragments drop from elites, chests, ore veins and Whisper caches as you play - you rarely need to farm them directly.
- Nightmare Dungeons with gem affixes (for example an Amethyst Reserve modifier) dump huge amounts of fragments in a single run and are the best bulk source. Conversion between types is free at the Jeweler, so any gem-affix dungeon works.
- Helltides had their gem sources buffed this season - farm Cinders and you passively stack gems and fragments.
- Salvage unwanted Royal gems at the Blacksmith or Jeweler for a large batch of fragments each, then craft the color you actually need.
- Convert or trade: turn spare fragment types into the one you need at the Jeweler, or trade Royals with other players by color.
For chasing Royal and Grand gems directly, the Seer's Reach dungeon in Skovos has been the go-to fast run - a quick boss kill for guaranteed Royals and a shot at Grands (Blizzard flagged this one for a fix, so confirm it still works before relying on it). If you would rather skip the grind entirely, you can pick up Diablo 4 gems directly, and our loot farming guide shows where gem farming fits the wider material loop.
Socketing Priority Tips
- Upgrade your weapon gem first and to the highest tier you can - the multiplicative bonus is your biggest gem payoff.
- Put your best gem into your highest-impact weapon socket before spreading resources to secondary ones.
- Cap your lowest resistance with a jewelry gem before adding a second damage or utility gem.
- Do not mix runes and gems in the same item expecting both - the last one socketed wins and clears the other.
- Save Scattered Prisms for the gear you will actually keep, not placeholder pieces.
FAQ
What is the best gem for my weapon in Season 14?
What do gems do in each slot?
Weapon gems give a multiplicative damage bonus, armor gems give a defensive or attribute bonus (primary stats, barrier, life), and jewelry gems give a large resistance to their element.
What are Horadric and Flawless Horadric gems?
The two highest gem tiers, made only in the Horadric Cube: 5 Grand gems make one Horadric gem (about a 28% weapon multiplier), and 5 Horadric gems make one Flawless Horadric (about 32%). The Jeweler cannot craft these.
How do I farm gems fast in Season 14?
Run Nightmare Dungeons with gem affixes for bulk fragments, farm buffed Helltides, and salvage spare Royal gems for large fragment batches. Convert types free at the Jeweler. See our loot farming guide.
Which gem should I use for resistances?
How do I add a socket to my gear?
At the Jeweler with a Scattered Prism on Ancestral gear. Scattered Prisms drop from World Bosses, Treasure Goblins and Legion events. Two-handed weapons can hold two sockets.
Can I use gems and runes in the same item?
No - gems and runes share the same sockets. Socketing a rune into a gemmed item removes the gems, and socketing a gem removes any runes. Decide per item whether you want the gem bonus or the runeword.
Is Diamond a good gem?
Yes, as the flexible option. Diamond gives about 20% to all damage in a weapon, so it is the best pick for hybrid builds or classes without a single dominant damage type; a matching single-element gem edges it out on a focused build.
