- Armor - pick the gem whose defensive or attribute bonus your build needs. These give things like primary stats, barrier generation or extra life, so the best armor gem is build-dependent rather than universal.
- Jewelry - each gem grants resistance to its element, and those values are large in Season 14. Slot the gem that covers your lowest resistance: Ruby for Fire, Sapphire for Cold, Emerald for Poison, Topaz for Lightning, Amethyst for Shadow.
Check your character sheet for the resistance you are lowest on and fill it first - one capped resistance is worth more than spreading gems thin. There is no excuse for an empty resistance socket this season, since gem sources were buffed.

Gems climb through tiers, and the top two are the real endgame chase. You craft up to Grand at the Jeweler from Gem Fragments (Grand also needs Forgotten Souls). The two highest tiers, Horadric and Flawless Horadric, are made only in the Horadric Cube with the Amalgamation recipe, not at the Jeweler.

Because each step is a 5-to-1 Amalgamation, a single Flawless Horadric gem costs 25 Grand gems, so prioritise the one gem that matches your main damage type before touching secondary sockets. How to Farm Gems Fast
Everything above runs on Gem Fragments and Grand gems, so here is how to stockpile them:
- Gem Fragments drop from elites, chests, ore veins and Whisper caches as you play - you rarely need to farm them directly.
- Nightmare Dungeons with gem affixes (for example an Amethyst Reserve modifier) dump huge amounts of fragments in a single run and are the best bulk source. Conversion between types is free at the Jeweler, so any gem-affix dungeon works.
- Helltides had their gem sources buffed this season - farm Cinders and you passively stack gems and fragments.
- Salvage unwanted Royal gems at the Blacksmith or Jeweler for a large batch of fragments each, then craft the color you actually need.
- Convert or trade: turn spare fragment types into the one you need at the Jeweler, or trade Royals with other players by color.
