To unlock the World Tree in Palworld 1.0, defeat every Tower Boss across Palpagos, Feybreak, and Sunreach, then complete the Panthalus quest: collect four Echobones, craft the Echoing Flute, catch the giant whale Pal Panthalus at the Deserted Islet, and use the World Tree terminal with it in your party. Inside waits The Sealed Calamity - three Level 78 guardians, a door sealed by eight Key Spheres, and the Level 80 final boss Zanara and Astralym.
The World Tree has loomed over the map since day one, but simply flying to its terminal does nothing. Here is every step in order, the fight strategies, and what to farm once you are inside.

Prerequisites: Every Tower Boss and Sunreach
The Panthalus questline only becomes available once every Tower Boss in Palpagos, Feybreak, and Sunreach is down. The Sunreach leg is the newest: reach the sky region through the portal on top of the Feybreak Tower, then disable the six defense modules scattered across the islands to open the path to the Azure Covenant tower (in multiplayer, every player needs to disable them). Defeat Auri and Shaolong there, then speak to Auri on the ledge nearby after the fight - that conversation closes out the Sunreacher and The Calamity missions and points you to the researcher who starts the World Tree chain.
If any towers are still standing, our Tower Bosses guide lists every boss with its level, location, and counter. You will need all of them anyway - the final door inside the World Tree checks for it.
Step 1: Find the Researcher at the Deserted Islet
Head to the Deserted Islet, a tiny island east of Ice Wind Island and north of Twilight Dunes, west of the No Man's Trail fast travel point. Unlock the fast travel here first, then talk to the Ancient Civilization Researcher standing beside it. He is studying an ancient civilization and hunting the remains of a gigantic whale-like creature. The conversation hands you the faded schematic for the Echoing Flute and starts the Panthalus main quest, marking four giant whale remains on your map.
Step 2: Collect All Four Echobones
Track the quest to reveal the four whale skeletons, then visit each and grab the interactable bone inside the whale's head. All four sites sit near towers, so fast travel covers most of the trip. The bones you need:
Echobone | Where |
|---|---|
Crashing Wave Bone | Marked whale remains (quest marker) |
Stillness Bone | Marked whale remains (quest marker) |
Bubbling Bone | Marked whale remains (quest marker) |
Sea Breeze Bone | Marked whale remains (quest marker) |
All four are required as crafting materials - the flute cannot be assembled without the full set.
Step 3: Craft the Echoing Flute
Return to any base and craft the Echoing Flute from the four Echobones at any workbench - even a basic one works, so no high-tier station is needed. Drop a strong Handiwork Pal like Anubis on the bench to finish it quickly. While you are home, stock up on your best Pal Spheres and restock ammo: the next step is a deep-endgame fight.
Step 4: Summon and Catch Panthalus
Bring the flute back to the Deserted Islet, speak to the researcher again, then interact with the glowing shrine stone beside him. A cutscene plays your character blowing the flute, and Panthalus - the giant whale seen soaring over the World Tree in the 1.0 trailer - rises from the sea. You have 10 minutes to bring it down.
Panthalus is a Level 70 Water Pal with a little over 350,000 HP, so bring Electric: Beakon is the cleanest pick, with Helzephyr Lux a strong alternative. The whale is huge and slow, its attacks telegraph clearly, and its body is the weak point, so a geared endgame team dodges everything and chips it down safely.
The one rule that matters: you must catch it, not kill it. If Panthalus dies, you redo the whole fight. The good news is that once its HP hits the last sliver, any Pal Sphere is a guaranteed catch - no need to burn top-tier spheres. Capturing it also pays out 5 Ancient Technology Points, and Panthalus itself is a prize: its Resonant Guardian Partner Skill makes it a rideable flying mount despite being a Water type, and at a base it patrols the skies and bombards intruders (one Panthalus per base).
Step 5: Open the World Tree Barrier
With Panthalus caught, speak to the researcher once more to receive the To The World Tree quest, then fly to the World Tree at the edge of the map and interact with the terminal in front of the energy barrier. A cutscene plays, the barrier drops, and the region opens for good.
If the terminal does nothing, one of two things is missing: a Tower Boss somewhere is still alive, or the Panthalus quest was never fully turned in - make sure you caught the whale and spoke to the researcher afterward before making the trip.
Inside the World Tree: What to Know and Farm
The World Tree is the game's endgame zone, split into multiple biomes - including a radiation area where you must wear the Gas Mask helmet or steadily lose health. Its unique loot is the reason to keep coming back:
- Radiant Gems - hidden in the depths, these combine into Awakening Gems that unlock your Pals' hidden power through the new Awakening system.
- Paloxite and Mythical Wood - endgame-only materials. Apply Holy Water to yourself and your active Pal before touching them, or they vanish as you approach.
- Teafant Springs - statue checkpoints scattered through the zone that restore your health and your party Pal's health on interaction.
Expect Level 75+ enemies throughout, so arrive at or near the Level 80 cap with your best gear.
The Sealed Calamity: The Final Gauntlet
Deep in the region, a second barrier blocks the path to the finale. Read the journal just to the right of it: it describes three locations within the World Tree, and quest markers appear for each. At every location waits a Level 78 Boss Pal - defeat all three and the barrier opens.
One locked door remains, and it checks for all eight Key Spheres, earned by defeating all eight faction Tower Bosses. If you followed the prerequisites you already have them; if not, clear the stragglers and return. With the full set, the door opens on the final boss.
Final Boss: Zanara and Astralym
The story ends against Zanara and Astralym, a Level 80 duo with 420,000 HP inside the tall tower at the western corner of the zone. Astralym, the six-winged dragon, is boss-exclusive and appears nowhere else in the game. The pair is completely typeless, so there is no elemental weakness to exploit - this is a pure gear and skill check. Bring your strongest Awakened Pals, top-tier weapons and armor, and treat every attack as lethal: dodge everything, use the dash to reposition, and grind the health bar down. Win, and the final cutscene rolls - the main story of Palworld is complete.
Tips and Common Mistakes
- Do not kill Panthalus - whittle it to the last sliver and throw any sphere for the guaranteed catch.
- Turn in every step: catching the whale is not enough, you must speak to the researcher to get To The World Tree before the terminal works.
- Craft the Gas Mask before exploring, or the radiation biome will eat your health bar.
- Carry Holy Water at all times inside the zone, or Paloxite and Mythical Wood will despawn on approach.
- In multiplayer, every player must disable the six Sunreach defense modules, not just the host.
- Sweep the depths for Radiant Gems while you are there - Awakening your team is the best preparation for the typeless final fight.

FAQ
How do you unlock the World Tree in Palworld?
Defeat every Tower Boss across Palpagos, Feybreak, and Sunreach, then complete the Panthalus quest from the Ancient Civilization Researcher at the Deserted Islet: collect four Echobones, craft the Echoing Flute, catch Panthalus at the shrine, and interact with the World Tree terminal with it in your party. The barrier then drops permanently.
Where is the Deserted Islet in Palworld?
It is a small island east of Ice Wind Island and north of Twilight Dunes, just west of the No Man's Trail fast travel point, a short flight southeast of the World Tree. Unlock its fast travel point on arrival, then speak to the Ancient Civilization Researcher standing beside it.
Do you have to catch Panthalus or can you kill it?
You must catch it to progress - if Panthalus dies, you redo the fight. Once its HP is reduced to the last sliver, any Pal Sphere is a guaranteed catch, so there is no need to spend high-tier spheres. Catching it also grants 5 Ancient Technology Points.
What level is Panthalus and what is it weak to?
Panthalus is a Level 70 Water-type Pal with just over 350,000 HP and a 10-minute fight timer. Electric Pals counter it best - Beakon is the top pick, with Helzephyr Lux a solid alternative. It is large and slow with clearly telegraphed attacks, and its body is the weak point.
What is The Sealed Calamity in Palworld?
It is the final questline inside the World Tree. A second barrier opens after you defeat three Level 78 Boss Pals at locations described in a journal beside it, and the last door requires all eight Key Spheres, earned by defeating all eight faction Tower Bosses. Behind it waits the final boss.
Who is the final boss of Palworld?
Zanara and Astralym, a Level 80 duo with 420,000 HP found in the tall tower at the western corner of the World Tree. They are completely typeless, so no elemental weakness applies, and Astralym is boss-exclusive - it appears nowhere else in the game. Defeating them completes the main story.
What can you farm inside the World Tree?
Radiant Gems for the Awakening system, plus the endgame-only materials Paloxite and Mythical Wood, which require applying Holy Water to yourself and your active Pal before pickup or they vanish. Teafant Spring statues scattered through the zone restore health, and part of the region is a radiation biome that requires the Gas Mask helmet.
