Diablo 4 Season 14 Lair Keys Guide: All Keys & Farming

By Published: Updated: ~4 min

The complete Diablo 4 Season 14 Lair Keys guide: what Lair, Greater and Superior Lair Keys open, the Initiate-Greater-Exalted boss ladder, where each key drops (Helltides, Initiate bosses, Deathtoll Chambers), Stygian Stones, and which key to farm first.

In Diablo 4 Season 14 a Lair Key opens a boss's Hoard - the reward chest that appears after you kill a Lair Boss - not the fight itself. There are three key types for the three boss tiers, and the whole game is farming the key that unlocks the boss you actually want. This guide breaks down every Lair Key, what it opens, where it drops, and how to keep a steady supply.

How Lair Keys Work

Endgame bosses in Season 14 are grouped as Lair Bosses across three difficulty tiers - Initiate, Greater and Exalted - covering roughly eleven permanent bosses plus the seasonal Corrupted Reaper. The rules that matter:

  • You do not need a key to start the fight - only to open the Hoard chest after the boss dies. Show up keyless and you get scraps while everyone with a key claims the real loot.
  • In a group, every player brings their own key to open their own Hoard - grouping does not solve a key shortage.
  • You must be in Torment 1 or higher to challenge Lair Bosses.
  • The first Unique from a Lair Boss is guaranteed from that boss's pool, so keys are how you target specific gear - the boss loot table shows which boss holds what.

The Three Lair Key Types

Each tier uses its own key. Here is the quick map:

Key
Opens
Best sources
Lair Key (Standard)
Initiate Lair Boss Hoards
Helltides, War Plans, general endgame activities, bartering
Greater Lair Boss Hoards (Duriel, Andariel and similar)
Beating Initiate Lair Bosses, War Plans, Stygian Stones
Superior Lair Key
Exalted tier - Belial and the Corrupted Reaper
Deathtoll Chambers, Seasonal caches, mercenary bartering

Lair Keys: Your Entry Point

Standard Lair Keys open Initiate Lair Boss Hoards and are the first step into the boss ladder - cheap and high-volume. The fastest source is Helltides: War Plan nodes that boost Hellwyrm and Maggot spawns (for example Pang of Duriel) noticeably raise key drops alongside crafting materials. You also pick them up from general endgame activities, War Plans rewards and mercenary bartering. Do not judge a Lair Key by one chest - their real value is that Initiate boss kills feed you Greater keys, so they are the start of a chain rather than an end in themselves.

Greater Lair Keys

Greater Lair Keys open the Greater tier - your Duriel and Andariel Mythic-farming staples. They do not drop freely in the open world; the main source is defeating Initiate Lair Bosses and opening their Hoards, with War Plans as a secondary source. The shortcut is the Stygian Stone: Initiate bosses have a chance to drop one, and it converts 1-to-1 into any Greater Lair Key you are missing - so hold onto them to cover whichever Greater boss you want to run next.

Superior Lair Keys (formerly Betrayer's Husks)

Superior Lair Keys are the top tier, renamed from Betrayer's Husks in Patch 3.1 because Belial is no longer the only Exalted boss. They open the Exalted Hoards: Belial and the seasonal Corrupted Reaper. If you carried Betrayer's Husks over from last season, they became Superior Lair Keys automatically.

The best source is the Deathtoll Chamber, which Blizzard's Season 14 overview calls the top source. You reach it by killing a Realmwalker (spawned from Surging or Colossal Pandemonium Ruptures) or by running a Nightmare Dungeon with the Rupture affix - the full route is in our Ruptures and Realmwalkers guide. Other sources are limited: early Seasonal cache rewards from Season Ranks, mercenary bartering (Subo's Boss Summoning reward, paid in Pale Marks), and the occasional Belial ambush after you open a regular Lair Boss Hoard - a bonus rather than a plan.

The Corrupted Reaper hoard costs two Superior Lair Keys and has the highest Mythic Unique drop rate in the game plus the best Pandemonium Fragment supply, so it is the endgame target - see our Corrupted Reaper guide for the fight and the Mythic Uniques 3.0 guide for what to do with the Fragments. Belial is the alternative: a more focused loot pool, better when you are hunting one specific Unique, since the Reaper's pool is large and cluttered.

Which Key to Farm First

Farm the key that moves you toward the boss you want, not the one that drops most often - a stash full of the wrong keys is the classic week-one mistake.

  • Lair Keys - cheap and plentiful, mostly a stepping stone to Greater keys and materials.
  • Greater Lair Keys - your steady Duriel and Andariel Mythic-farming layer; bank Stygian Stones to cover gaps.
  • Superior Lair Keys - the endgame. Belial and the Corrupted Reaper are where Mythic Uniques actually flow, and the Reaper's Fragments feed your best crafting.

Run it as a loop rather than one activity: keep Helltides and War Plans topping up Lair Keys, spend those on Initiate bosses for Greater keys, and push Deathtoll Chambers when your goal becomes Superior keys and the Corrupted Reaper. Where key farming sits in the wider material economy is covered in our loot farming guide.

FAQ

What are Lair Keys used for in Diablo 4?

A Lair Key opens a Lair Boss's Hoard - the reward chest that appears after you kill the boss. You do not need it to start the fight, only to claim the loot, and in a group every player needs their own key.

What is the difference between Lair, Greater and Superior Lair Keys?

They match the three boss tiers: Lair Keys open Initiate Hoards, Greater Lair Keys open Greater Hoards (Duriel, Andariel), and Superior Lair Keys open the Exalted tier (Belial and the Corrupted Reaper).

How do I get Superior Lair Keys?

The best source is the Deathtoll Chamber, reached by killing a Realmwalker from Surging or Colossal Ruptures, or a Nightmare Dungeon with the Rupture affix. Superior Lair Keys are the renamed Betrayer's Husks. See our Ruptures guide.

How do I get Greater Lair Keys?

Mainly by defeating Initiate Lair Bosses and opening their Hoards, plus War Plans rewards. A Stygian Stone (dropped by Initiate bosses) converts 1-to-1 into any Greater Lair Key you need.

What do Superior Lair Keys open?

The Exalted tier: Belial and the seasonal Corrupted Reaper. The Corrupted Reaper hoard costs two Superior Lair Keys and has the highest Mythic Unique drop rate and best Pandemonium Fragment supply in the game.

Do I need a key to fight a Lair Boss?

No. The fight is free - the key only opens the Hoard chest afterward. If you fight keyless you still kill the boss but walk away with almost nothing, so bring your keys before you summon.

What is a Stygian Stone?

A material that converts 1-to-1 into any Greater Lair Key you are missing. Initiate Lair Bosses have a chance to drop one, so save them to cover whichever Greater boss you want to run next.

Should I farm Belial or the Corrupted Reaper with Superior Lair Keys?

The Corrupted Reaper has the highest Mythic Unique rate and best Pandemonium Fragment drops, but its pool is cluttered. Belial has a more focused pool, so pick Belial when hunting one specific Unique and the Reaper for raw Mythic and Fragment volume.
