Apex Talents are a new Midnight talent layer added to the bottom of each specialization tree. Think of them like a mini-package that “locks in” how your core buttons behave: they enhance signature abilities, add extra interactions, and provide meaningful power without rewriting your entire spec from scratch.
What Are Apex Talents in Midnight?
Almost like tier set bonuses, Apex Talents are a set of talent nodes added to the bottom of the specialization tree for each class in World of Warcraft. These talents are designed to modify and enhance signature abilities for each specialization in new and exciting ways. Each set of Apex Talents will have four talent points to spend across three sequential talents, with two points available for the middle talent in the path.
Unlike Hero Talents, players are not required to put talent points into Apex Talents, should they choose not to. However, it is strongly encouraged that you do so, as these talents bring forth significant power while also immensely enhancing the gameplay for your specialization. Who doesn't like being powerful?
Midnight Apex Talents: Quick Takeaways
- They sit at the bottom of your specialization tree and are designed to amplify signature abilities.
- They are optional, but skipping them usually means giving up a large chunk of power and gameplay “feel”.
- The path is sequential: later nodes require earlier nodes to be selected first.
How to Unlock Apex Talents in Midnight
The first node of Apex Talents will unlock once the player reaches Level 81 . From there, the second node unlocks at Level 84 with the final node unlocking at Level 90 . With the Midnight expansion, the player level cap is increasing to 90, giving players 10 more skill points to invest into their class and specialization trees.
During unlocked at level 81, players will need to invest a certain amount of talent points into the previous parts of the specialization tree to then start putting points into Apex Talents. Players will need to invest 20 points into the specialization tree before the Apex Talent nodes unlock. For the second and third nodes of Apex Talents, the previous Apex Talent must be talented first.
- Unlock levels: 1st Talent at Level 81, 2nd Talent at Level 84, 3rd Talent at Level 90.
- Tree requirement: you typically need 20 points invested into the specialization tree before Apex nodes open up.
How to Choose Apex Talents (Practical Guidance)
Apex Talents are usually “set-and-forget” once you pick a build, but you can still adjust based on content. Use these rules of thumb:
- Raids: value consistency and uptime on long fights; pick nodes that improve your core rotation without requiring perfect timing.
- Mythic Plus: value burst, cleave, and short cooldown value that repeats every pull.
- Open world / delves: value self-sustain and low downtime.
As a habit, lock in your Hero Tree first, then choose Apex Talents that reinforce that playstyle. (If you missed it, see our Midnight Hero Talents overview.)

FAQ
Are Apex Talents mandatory?
They are not technically required, but in practice most builds will take them because they provide meaningful power and reinforce your specialization’s core gameplay.
Do Apex Talents replace Hero Talents?
No. Hero Talents and Apex Talents are separate layers. Hero Talents define a “sub-specialization” direction; Apex Talents sit in your specialization tree and enhance key abilities.
Can I change Apex Talents?
Yes. You can swap them the same way you respec talents or switch talent loadouts. Many players keep a raid-focused setup and a dungeon-focused setup.
