How Rare Cutting Edge Actually Is

Cutting Edge sits at the top of the raid achievement ladder and the completion rate reflects it. Mythic is the only difficulty that awards it, Mythic runs on a fixed twenty-player roster with no scaling to hide behind, and the encounter has to fall before the next tier opens. Between the roster requirement, the gear requirement and the deadline, the overwhelming majority of the raiding population finishes a season without it, and a large share of guilds that raid Mythic every week still do not close out the final boss. That is the whole reason the Feat of Strength carries weight when someone links it: it is not a participation marker, it is evidence a specific fight died on a specific schedule.

Cutting Edge Is an Achievement, Not a Title

This is the single most common misunderstanding about the reward, and plenty of shops repeat it. Cutting Edge itself grants no title. It is a Feat of Strength and nothing else: it shows on the character's achievement list and in armory profiles, and that is the reward. Where a title does exist for a final boss, it comes from that boss's own separate Mythic kill achievement rather than from Cutting Edge, so the two are earned by the same kill but are not the same reward. If a title is what you are actually after, check which achievement carries it for the current tier before you buy anything, because the answer changes from raid to raid.

There Is One Cutting Edge Per Tier, and They Do Not Carry Over

Every raid tier issues its own Cutting Edge, named after that raid's final boss, and each one closes permanently when the next tier arrives. Holding an older one does nothing for the current tier and does not shorten the work. That is what makes the achievement accumulate rather than upgrade: a raider who has been closing out tiers for years carries a row of them, each pinned to a window that is gone. It also means the decision in front of you is always about this tier only. Whatever happened last season has no bearing on whether the current final boss goes down before the clock runs out.

What percentage of players have the Cutting Edge achievement?

There is no official figure published by Blizzard, and any shop quoting an exact percentage is guessing. What can be said honestly is that it is among the rarest PvE achievements in the game, because it requires the hardest difficulty, a full twenty-player roster and a hard deadline all at once. Treat published numbers as estimates from third-party armory scrapes rather than fact.

Do I also get Ahead of the Curve from this boost?

Yes. Ahead of the Curve asks for the final boss on Heroic difficulty or higher, and Mythic is higher, so the same kill awards both. Buying the Heroic version separately alongside this one would be paying twice for one result.

Do I need to clear the rest of the raid first?

No. Cutting Edge is tied to the final encounter alone, not to raid progress or a boss count, and the run takes you to that boss. Nothing earlier in the raid needs to be done on your character beforehand.

Can I play my own character instead of sharing my account?

Yes. Pick Self-Play and you join the raid group on your own character with no login details shared. One thing to know on that mode: land at least one hit on the boss so the game counts you toward loot eligibility. Piloted and Remote Desktop are the hands-off alternatives.
