The Eight Bosses of the Venomous Abyss

The raid descends through Ula'tek's prison in order: Nek'zali the Soulcoiler opens the temple, then the Entombed Sentinels, Vashnik the Malignant, The Lost Explorers, Sszorak, The Twin Fangs, The Coiled Altar, and Ula'tek herself closes it. Three of the eight are multi-target fights rather than single bosses. The Entombed Sentinels are two golems that take almost no damage while they are near each other. The Lost Explorers is a fight against three possessed tortollans. The Twin Fangs puts Vexhul and Ithraz in the room at once with separate mechanics running on each. That is why add control, interrupts and crowd control decide this raid more than raw damage does, and why it punishes pug groups harder than a tier of single-target bosses would.

Venomous Abyss Loot by Difficulty

Each difficulty drops on its own upgrade track, hands out the matching Mistcrest, and pays a Great Vault reward a full track higher:

The Vault column is the part worth reading twice. Blizzard rebuilt raid rewards for patch 12.1 because Mythic+ had been outpacing raiding badly enough to hurt Heroic, so every raid Vault reward now jumps a full upgrade track above the difficulty that earned it. A Normal week pays out at Hero 1/6, which is 305, the level Heroic bosses drop at. A Heroic week pays at Myth 1/6, which is 318, where Mythic loot starts. A Mythic week pays at Myth 6/6, which is 335. Raid bonus rolls follow the same rule and now cost one Nebulous Voidcore instead of two. Boss drops themselves also climb as you go deeper, so the ranges above are opener to final boss, not rounding.

Tier Set Tokens and the Five Bosses That Drop Them

Five of the eight bosses drop a Season 2 tier token, and each one is locked to a single armor slot instead of the old cross-class groupings. The Entombed Sentinels hold the hands token, Vashnik the Malignant the chest, The Lost Explorers the shoulders, Sszorak the legs, and The Twin Fangs the head. Nek'zali, The Coiled Altar and Ula'tek drop none at all, which means the full set comes out of the middle of the raid rather than the finale, and any full clear from Normal upward puts all five slots in range. Each token also comes in four armor-type versions, so the one that drops for you is decided by what you wear rather than what you roll against.

Which Difficulty Should You Take

The raid does not open all at once. Normal and Heroic launch with all eight bosses available immediately, while Mythic and the three Raid Finder wings unlock across the following weeks, with Raid Finder gated a wing at a time so its players reach Ula'tek last. That schedule answers the question for most people early in the season. Normal is the entry run: the whole temple, tier tokens, the Champion track, and a Vault that already pays at Heroic level. Heroic is the one people actually come for, because it is the only difficulty that awards Ahead of the Curve: Ula'tek, and because its Vault crosses into Myth-track gear without anyone committing to Mythic progression. Mythic is the prestige bracket, carrying Cutting Edge: Ula'tek and the season's highest item levels. If you are unsure, take Heroic: it is where the achievement and the reward curve both turn.
