The Midnight Campaign, Zone by Zone

The level-up campaign is what takes a character from 80 to 90, and it is tracked in the Midnight achievement. It opens with The Light's Summons and a desperate defence of the Sunwell on the Isle of Quel'Danas, then runs through Eversong Woods. From there the chain splits: Arator's Journey, Harandar and Zul'Aman all open at once and can be taken in any order between levels 83 and 88, before the story closes out in the Voidstorm. Each zone introduces its Renown faction as you go, which is why a finished campaign is also the starting line for every reputation track in the expansion. The Harandar leg is the one with a second prize attached: clearing it is what puts the haranir allied race in reach.

The War of Light and Shadow

Hitting 90 does not end the story, it starts the second half of it. The War of Light and Shadow is a six-chapter campaign that begins with Feeding the Flame in the centre of Silvermoon City, and it needs both level 90 and a finished Midnight campaign behind it. Turalyon, Alleria and Arator reunite in the Voidstorm to assault the Voidspire, Xal'atath's seat of power, and what happens there sets up the raid tier rather than wrapping the expansion up. It runs through Foothold, Gathering of the Elves, The Darkwell, The Voidspire, The Battle of the Bridge and Dawn of a New Well. It also carries an unlock most people do not expect from a story chain: finishing it is what opens the demon hunter class to void elves.

The Coiled Isle Campaign

The story is not finished. Patch 12.1, Curse of Ula'tek, takes the campaign east of Zul'Aman to the Coiled Isle as Zul'jarra chases her brother Zul'jan onto an island the fog has been hiding, and finds a long-sealed Amani history and a serpent goddess waiting under it. The lead-in already went live: the chapter where Zul'jan attends the haranir gathering as the Amani representative opened on 7 July and runs directly into the 12.1 campaign, so it can be cleared now rather than later. Blizzard has not announced a date for the patch itself. When it lands, the Coiled Isle campaign is what opens the zone, its Zul'jarra's Forces Renown track, and the Altar of Corrosion talent tree that only works on the island.

No. Once any character on your account has the Midnight achievement, alts can skip the chain and go straight to max-level content. That is why the first clear is the expensive one and every character after it is not. Be aware that a skip is permanent for the character that takes it, so run the story first on any alt you actually want to play it on.
